Congrats! You’ve made the big decision on hiring a professional to do your newborn photos
I have a blog post on tips on choosing your newborn photographer if you haven’t decided yet.
When it comes to newborn photography there are two main styles – a studio newborn session and a lifestyle baby session.
Both the studio and lifestyle sessions are beautiful in their own way but do have some major differences as follows:

Location:
A studio newborn sessions is held at my Edmonton home based studio. Archie, my Boston terrier, often greets company and quickly makes best friends. My studio space provides me with a warm space where I have all my lighting, posing props, blankets and backdrops. Majority of my clients prefer to do studio sessions as they don’t think their house is either A) clean enough, B) have enough light, or C) prefer more of a portrait of their baby with minimal distractions. This is usually one of momma and baby’s first trips out of the house, which is a feeling of achievement in itself!
A lifestyle baby session is done in the comfort of your own home and in rooms with the best lighting. Our session is often unposed but, softly directed. Not all the focus is on baby, rather a combo of baby and the day-to-day activities and surroundings that fills their new life. A bedroom with large windows, soft lighting and neutral bedding is an ideal spot to capture a more unposed family photo. It’s always fun to get a shot of dad changing a diaper too.

Time:
My studio newborn session is best done under three weeks old to achieve those curled up sleeping poses. These shots show just how small and squishy baby was in utero. Babies are photographed on a neutral blanket with few background distractions. This showcases the beauty of baby’s skin and tiny details like a nose or toes. These shots have a more artistic and minimalism approach. These sessions are often 2 hours in length.
My lifestyle baby session might be a good option for an older baby as there is less focus on obtaining that “perfect pose”. Less time is required to photograph this session because poses aren’t planned out and we just go with the flow of baby at that moment. Pets are always welcome to photobomb a shot or two.
Whichever style makes you happy just know you won’t regret having this special time documented. Your kid’s, kids will enjoy it!
